Why Won't My Child Fall Asleep Without Me?

If bedtime has become an hour of lying beside your child, waiting for them to fall asleep, you're not alone.
One of the most common concerns I hear from parents of school-aged children is:
"My child won't fall asleep unless I'm next to them."
Many parents worry they've created a bad habit or that they've somehow got bedtime wrong.
But that's rarely how I see it.
Let's investigate...

It's not always about habits
As children get older, bedtime can become about much more than simply falling asleep.
Sometimes it's about confidence, anxiety or just simply needing a little extra reassurance or connection before they can settle to sleep.
The important thing isn't rushing to get out of the room. It's understanding why your child needs you there in the first place. Once you understand the reason, it's much easier to choose the right approach for your family.
Every child is different
Some children happily wave goodnight and drift off to sleep.
Others need a little more support at bedtime.
Neither makes you a "good" or "bad" parent.
What matters is whether your current bedtime routine is working for your family.
If bedtime has become stressful, is taking over your evenings or no longer feels sustainable, it may be time to make some gentle changes.
Understanding comes before solutions
I never start by saying:
"Let's get you out of the room?"
I start by asking:
"Why does your child need you there in the first place?"
Once we understand what's driving the behaviour, we can create a plan that helps your child build confidence at bedtime in a way that feels right for your family.
Many parents assume sleep coaching is only for babies and toddlers, but I also support families with older children who are finding bedtime difficult. It's never too late to make bedtime feel calmer and more enjoyable.
If bedtime has become the hardest part of your day, you don't have to figure it out alone.
I help families stop guessing and start understanding their child's sleep.
