Not Every Sleep Challenge Is a Sleep Regression

One of the biggest myths I hear from parents is that every sleep challenge must be a sleep regression.
A few extra night wakings? Sleep regression.
Nap refusal? Sleep regression.
Bedtime suddenly becoming difficult? Sleep regression.
While the 4-month sleep regression is a genuine developmental change, not every sleep challenge is caused by one.
So what else could be going on?

Your child's sleep needs may have changed
As children grow, the amount of sleep they need changes too. If their routine no longer matches their individual sleep needs, sleep can suddenly become much more challenging.
Reliance on falling asleep in a certain way
Children have a preference for everything and that includes sleep. Frequent overnight wakings can occur because a child needs support to fall back to sleep. Perhaps they are fed to sleep, cuddled or rocked to sleep, or you hold their hand. Each time they wake from a sleep cycle, it's natural for them to need that support again overnight.
Developmental milestones
Learning a new skill, becoming more aware of the world or experiencing separation anxiety can all temporarily affect sleep.
Illness or teething
If your child is feeling unwell or uncomfortable, it's completely understandable that their sleep may be disrupted for a short period.
Sometimes it's simply a phase
Not every sleep challenge needs fixing. Some changes are short-lived and resolve as quickly as they appeared.
How to spot the difference
Rather than assuming every sleep challenge is a regression, I encourage parents to look at the bigger picture.
How old is your child?
How much sleep are they getting across 24 hours?
Has anything changed in their routine or development?
How do they currently fall asleep at bedtime?
Understanding why your child is struggling with sleep is far more helpful than putting every challenge into the "sleep regression" box.
If you're finding yourself constantly wondering what's causing your child's sleep challenges, you don't have to figure it out alone.
I help families stop guessing and start understanding their child's sleep.
