Why Has My Baby Suddenly Started Fighting Naps?

If your baby has suddenly started fighting naps, it can feel like their sleep has changed overnight.

One day they're happily settling for naps.

The next, every nap feels like a battle.

It's easy to assume something has gone wrong.

But nap refusal doesn't always mean your baby doesn't need sleep.

Let's investigate...

Has your baby's sleep needs changed?

As babies grow, the amount of sleep they need gradually reduces.

They become capable of staying awake for longer and, eventually, they begin dropping naps altogether.

If your routine is still expecting more sleep than your baby actually needs, they may start resisting naps because they simply aren't tired enough.

Looking at your baby's 24-hour sleep needs rather than relying on generic wake windows can often provide the answer.

Are they ready for a routine adjustment?

Sometimes the routine that worked brilliantly a few weeks ago no longer matches your baby's changing sleep needs.

Small adjustments to awake time, nap time (or nap length) or bedtime can often make a big difference.

The goal isn't to get your baby to sleep more.

It's to make sure the sleep you're offering matches what they actually need.

Could something else be affecting sleep?

Sleep isn't influenced by routine alone.

Illness, teething, developmental milestones and changes in your baby's environment can all temporarily affect naps.

That's why I always encourage parents to look at the bigger picture before assuming something has gone wrong.

Ask a different question

Instead of asking:

"How can I get my baby to sleep?"

Try asking:

"Why is my baby suddenly fighting naps?"

That one small shift changes everything.

Once you understand what's driving the nap refusal, it's much easier to decide what to do next.

If nap times have become stressful and you're not sure what's causing the change, give some of these a try and let me know how you get on.
