Why Is My Baby Waking at 5am Every Morning?

Early morning waking is one of the most common reasons parents get in touch with me.

The first assumption is usually that their baby is overtired and needs an earlier bedtime.

But in many cases, that's not actually the reason.

Let's investigate...

Clue #1: How much sleep are they getting over 24 hours?

I don't use generic wake windows because they don't suit every baby or child. Instead, I look at 24-hour sleep needs.

Every child has an amount of sleep they're naturally capable of sleeping over a 24-hour period (just like adults do). As children grow, this amount gradually reduces.

Some children have higher sleep needs, while others naturally need less sleep. Both can be completely normal.

You can estimate your child's individual sleep need by tracking their sleep for around a week and working out the average amount they sleep across 24 hours. That average becomes your guide.

If your child's routine regularly offers more sleep than they're capable of sleeping, early morning waking can often be the result. They may simply have had all the sleep they need.

Clue #2: What time are they going to bed?

This links closely with clue number one.

Sometimes an earlier bedtime simply shifts the whole night earlier, which means your child naturally wakes earlier too.

If your child is already getting enough sleep across 24 hours, moving bedtime earlier doesn't usually create a longer night - it simply moves the entire sleep period forward.

Clue #3: How consistent are your mornings?

Consistency is really important when tackling early morning waking.

Regular lie-ins after difficult nights can reinforce an earlier body clock and make early mornings more likely to continue.

If your child wakes at 5am, try to keep naps, bedtime and morning wake-up times as consistent as possible. It can take a little time, but consistency helps their body clock adjust.

The real answer

It's uncommon for every child who wakes early to simply need more sleep.

Sometimes they just need a routine that better matches their own individual sleep needs.

Understanding why your child is waking is much more helpful than guessing.

If your mornings start before the sun and you've tried everything, I'd love to help you work out what's really going on.
