You may have heard this term springing about and are wondering what it means or how it's useful to you and your baby.
Well, to keep it simple, a wake window is the awake time in between your baby waking from one sleep until the next.
For example, baby wakes up in the morning at 7am.
The then have their first nap at 9am.
The wake window between these two sleeps is 2 hours.
When a baby is first born, their wake window is pretty short and as they grow, it matures and you'll notice that it gradually lengthens. Wake windows mature when naps are dropped so you may notice you've reduced down to 2 naps a day and your baby can now spend more time awake through the day.
It's also good to note that wake windows aren't always the same. It's pretty common for a baby to have a shorter wake window in the morning and a longer one before bed.
For example, their wake window in the morning may be 2 hours.
But they may be able to manage a period of 3 hours in between
their afternoon nap and bedtime.
My top tip: use wake windows as a guide to nap times throughout the day but don't live by them. Take time to understand your baby's sleepy signs and follow those more closely.
