How to Handle Reflux and Sleep

If your little one has reflux or silent reflux I really feel for you. One of my twins had it really bad for weeks and it was so tough. Interestingly, reflux can affect a baby's sleep even after the sick has stopped so it's a good idea to be mindful of that if you're struggling and your baby had (or still has) reflux.

If your baby is waking frequently, seems hungry regularly throughout the night or seem to be in pain overnight it's worth getting a check up as this could be reflux hanging around!

Most of the time some simple steps such as moving their feed to earlier in the evening can have a super positive affect on their sleep so identifying that the sleep challenges may be due to the reflux is a really good first step.

I've worked with lots of families with little ones with reflux and have a caring way of working. Pair that with my specialist knowledge and experience and you're on to a winner! Get in touch for a free, no obligation initial call to see how I can help your family sleep well.

What are the signs to look out for?

The following signs are symptons of reflux:

  • bringing up milk or being sick during or shortly after feeding

  • coughing or hiccupping when feeding

  • being unsettled during feeding

  • swallowing or gulping after burping or feeding

  • crying and not settling

  • not gaining weight as they're not keeping enough food down

Sometimes babies may have signs of reflux but will not bring up milk or be sick. This is known as silent reflux.

If your baby is showing any of these signs I recommend you seek medical advice from your GP or Doctor.

How can I help my baby sleep if they have reflux?

Reflux doesn't just go away at night (wouldn't that be magic if it did!) and unfortunately, there is no easy fix. However, I tell my clients that although you have to learn to live with it (until your baby grows out of it), you can learn to manage it so that you all sleep better.

Here are some tools to try:

  • Settle your baby to sleep sitting up and transfer to their sleep space once they are in a deep sleep

  • Tilt your baby's mattress by putting a towel or small blanket underneath one end to help digestion

  • Use dream feeds during the night

  • Bring bedtime feed earlier on in the evening and ensure some sitting up time afterwards
